Equipment

  • Grill or cast-iron skillet
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula or grill tongs
  • Knife & cutting board
  • Meat thermometer (optional but helpful)

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs ground chuck 80/20 or steak blend
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 brioche or hamburger buns
  • 4 slices sharp cheddar or provolone cheese
  • 1 large onion sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter for sautéing onions
  • Steak sauce like A.1. or your favorite brand
  • Lettuce tomato slices, and pickles (optional)

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Patties
  • In a bowl, gently mix ground beef with Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 equal-sized patties, slightly wider than your buns. Press a slight indentation in the center of each to prevent bulging while cooking.
  • Step 2: Sauté the Onions
  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and sauté onions until golden and caramelized, about 8–10 minutes. Set aside.
  • Step 3: Grill or Sear the Burgers
  • Heat grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until they reach desired doneness (160°F for medium). Add cheese slices during the last minute to melt.
  • Step 4: Toast the Buns
  • Optional but recommended—toast buns on the grill or skillet for 1–2 minutes until golden.
  • Step 5: Assemble
  • Place burgers on toasted buns. Top with sautéed onions, steak sauce, lettuce, tomato, and any other desired toppings. Serve immediately.

Notes

💡 Tips for Success Use ground beef with at least 20% fat for juicy burgers. Avoid over-mixing the meat—it makes burgers tough. Let patties rest 5 minutes after cooking to retain juices. Sear over high heat to form a flavorful crust.
