Isabel looked at the box.
For the first time since Gabriel had returned, his
The expression lost some of its harshness.
No trust.
Not yet.
But there is resistance.
“Adrian has the right to decide what he wants to do with you,” she said.
-I know.
Gabriel turned back to the boy.
—And if you decide you don’t want to see me, I’ll respect that.
Adrian looked at the man he had imagined throughout his life as someone indifferent.
Now he had in front of him a person who seemed just as deceived as they were, although in a different way.
That didn’t erase the absence.
It only changed its meaning.
“I want proof,” Adrian said.
Gabriel nodded.
—Whichever one you want.
—That you are my father.
Isabel opened her mouth.
Gabriel gently raised a hand.
-Alright.
Adrian kept his gaze fixed on her.
—And I don’t want anyone telling me how to feel afterwards.
-Neither.
The confirmation came days later.
Gabriel was his father.
But none of the difficult things disappeared with that result.

She trusted him again immediately.
Gabriel could no longer look at Mercedes the same way as before.
The truth resolved a biological question, not a relationship.

—Because for a long time I thought I had already had the life I wanted and I had lost it.
Adrian remained silent.
—To Mom?
—To your mother. And to the son who thought he had never had
born.
Adrian looked down at the newly adjusted hinge.
He said nothing more.
But he didn’t leave either.
Mercedes tried to contact Gabriel several times.
He agreed to see her only after making certain boundaries clear.
I would not allow him to approach Isabel or Adrián unless they wanted him to.
I would not return the old financial authorizations.
And I wouldn’t pretend that what happened could be reduced to an overprotective mother.
Mercedes didn’t lose everything.
Gabriel made sure she had a home and that her basic needs were met.
But she stopped maintaining the privileged life she had enjoyed while Isabel and Adrián survived on the bare minimum on the farm she had tried to erase from her future.
Months later, the property papers were regularized to protect Isabel and Adrián’s continued presence.
Gabriel did not organize any ceremony.
