Nobody Hides Like an Arizona State Trooper

  • by

There are plenty of things you expect to see when driving through Arizona.

Saguaro cacti.

Desert mountains.

Tumbleweeds.

Long stretches of open highway.

And, if you’re traveling through the desert, an occasional vehicle pulled over on the side of the road.

But there’s one thing Arizona drivers have learned not to underestimate:

The state trooper who somehow manages to disappear into the landscape. đźŚµđźš”

You can drive for miles through seemingly empty desert and think you’re completely alone.

Then suddenly…

Red and blue lights.

And you immediately realize that the “empty” roadside wasn’t nearly as empty as you thought.

Step 1: Enjoy the Open Arizona Highway

Picture yourself driving through the desert.

The windows are down.

The sun is blazing.

The mountains are visible in the distance.

There are cacti everywhere.

Traffic is light.

For a moment, the road feels almost completely empty.

You look ahead and think:

“Wow. Nobody is out here.”

That might be the exact moment you should become suspicious.

Step 2: Start Looking at the Desert Differently

Experienced Arizona drivers eventually develop a strange habit.

They don’t just look at the road anymore.

They look at everything beside the road.

Is that an SUV?

Is that a rock?

Is that a construction vehicle?

Is that a normal-looking vehicle parked near the shoulder?

Or is it something you should pay attention to?

Suddenly, the desert doesn’t feel quite so empty.

Step 3: The Cactus Becomes Suspicious

There is a giant saguaro standing alone beside the highway.

You look at it.

It looks completely normal.

But then you think:

“Could someone actually be sitting behind that?”

Probably not.

But after enough highway experiences, you start questioning everything.

A random turnout?

Suspicious.

An SUV parked near a mountain?

Very suspicious.

A vehicle sitting behind a hill?

Extremely suspicious.

At this point, the Arizona desert has become one giant guessing game.

Step 4: Then You Notice the SUV

You’re cruising along.

Everything is peaceful.

Then you see an SUV parked off the highway.

It doesn’t look particularly unusual.

You pass it.

Nothing happens.

You continue driving.

Then you check your rearview mirror.

Still nothing.

You start thinking:

“Maybe I’m fine.”

And then…

The lights appear.

Red. Blue.

Your stomach drops.

Suddenly you remember every mile-per-hour you have driven during the last ten minutes.
