Look underneath the cushions or on the sofa frame for a cleaning code.
You may see:
- W — water-based cleaning products are generally suitable.
- S — use a solvent-based upholstery cleaner.
- WS — either water- or solvent-based products may be suitable.
- X — vacuuming only; professional cleaning is usually safest.
If there is no label, test any cleaning solution on a small hidden area first.
Step 3: Don’t Soak the Couch
Whatever method you use, don’t saturate the fabric.
Excess water can push the pigment deeper into the upholstery and can potentially leave water marks or create moisture problems inside the cushions.
Instead, lightly dampen a clean white cloth and work gently.
Step 4: For Washable Marker
If the marks are washable marker and the fabric’s cleaning code allows water-based cleaning, try a small amount of mild dish soap diluted in water.
Blot the mark rather than aggressively rubbing it.
Work from the outside of the stain toward the center to reduce spreading.
Then blot with a separate cloth lightly dampened with clean water.
Step 5: For Crayon
Crayon is different because it contains wax.
Don’t immediately soak it with water.
First, gently scrape away any thick or raised crayon residue with the edge of a dull spoon or plastic card.
Then place a clean absorbent cloth over the area and use an appropriate upholstery-cleaning method for the fabric. Avoid putting a hot iron directly on upholstery unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically permit it.
Step 6: Permanent Marker Is More Difficult
If your son used permanent marker, don’t immediately pour rubbing alcohol or another solvent onto the couch.
Some upholstery fabrics can discolor or develop a permanent mark from solvents.
Test the appropriate cleaner on a hidden section first, or consider having a professional upholstery cleaner treat the affected areas.
And About the Couch…
Once you’ve dealt with the immediate panic, this might be one of those childhood stories you’ll laugh about years from now.
Today:
“WHY DID YOU DRAW ON THE COUCH?!” 😭
Years later:
“Remember when you completely redecorated the sofa?” 😂
The important thing is to clean it carefully rather than making the damage worse while trying to fix it.
