Not police. I want that down because everybody assumes it.
It was Odile Harker, who is my solicitor, and a forensic accountant called Piet Vandermeer who had been through my company’s ledgers for eleven days.
That afternoon a judge had granted a freezing order over three accounts and a without-notice order about the house, and they were sitting outside my gate at ten to eight because the order had to be served personally and because I had asked them to wait until I said.
They came in at four minutes past nine.
I did not take the lid off in front of the three of them like something out of a film. That is not what happened and I would not have got away with it.
What happened is that I carried a tray into my own dining room, put it down in the middle of that table, and did not lift the lid at all.
I said, “That’s not dinner. Odile, come in.”
And a woman of fifty-eight in a raincoat came through my hall with a document wallet, and Julius Dufour stood up so fast he took the cloth with him.
PART 3 — ANNEKE
The affair was not the beginning of it. The affair was the accident.
Anneke Roos came to work for me in the March of 2023.
She was twenty-six and she came to me through Hyacinth, who described her as the daughter of a friend from church who was very capable and needed a start.
I hired her as my assistant. She had the calendar, the inbox, and from the June she had the invoicing system.
That is what she was for.
I did not work that out on my own. Piet worked it out, because the first fraudulent invoice from that consultancy is dated the fourth of July 2023, which is nineteen days after Anneke Roos got access to the ledger.
Nineteen days.
She was put in my company to open a door, and the door opened, and for about fourteen months it worked beautifully.
And then in the autumn of last year she started with Julius, which nobody planned and which Hyacinth has since described, in a police interview, as the stupidest thing that girl ever did.
Because women who are sleeping with a man get careless in a completely different way from women who are stealing from one.
She used a tablet on my wifi. That is all. That is the whole reason any of this is on a memory stick.
PART 4 — SIX WEEKS
Here is mine and I have had to say it out loud in a room with a solicitor in it.
I found the first invoice in the February.
Not the June. The February.
I was doing a VAT reconciliation on a Sunday and there was a payment to a consultancy I had never heard of, and I pulled the file, and the file had one invoice in it with no reference number and no VAT line, and I sat at that desk and I knew.
And I did nothing for six weeks.
I told myself I was gathering. I was not gathering. I did not open the ledger again until the April.
I did nothing because doing something meant the marriage was finished, and it was the February, and I wanted one more birthday and one more Easter, and I thought if I did not look at it for a bit it might turn out to be an administrative error.
In those six weeks another thirty-one thousand pounds left my company.
That is not their thirty-one thousand. That is mine. I could have stopped it on a Sunday in February and I chose a birthday instead.
PART 5 — THE RESTAURANT
Nineteen months before that dinner there was a birthday for Hyacinth. Twenty-five of us in a restaurant in Pellerin.
I had booked it. I had paid the deposit and the flowers.
At the end I went up with my card to settle it, because I had arranged it.
And Hyacinth got up and came across and took the card out of my hand.
She held it up between two fingers and gave it to Julius.
And she said, to twenty-five people:
“Give me that. Julius settles up in this family, Marisol. Sit down — you’re embarrassing him.”
There was a laugh. Her brother, and two of Celeste’s friends.
My own mother was at the other end of that table and did not hear it, which I have decided to be glad about.
Nobody said one word.
And I sat down and let my husband pay four hundred and ninety pounds on a joint account that had been funded that month entirely out of my business.
There are four charges and there will be a trial next year and I am not going to write about any of it.
The house is mine. It always was. Julius left in the April.
The company is still going. It is smaller by about a third, which is the actual price of six weeks in the February, and I have stopped pretending otherwise.
Anneke Roos has cooperated. She will not be charged with the main counts. I am told I should be angry about that and I am not, particularly, because she was twenty-six and somebody’s friend from church put her in my office like a tool.
Julius settles up in this family.
Hyacinth Dufour said that in a restaurant in front of twenty-five people with my own card between her fingers.
And she was right, and that was the whole trick of it.
