Despite all the jokes, I-10 plays an important role in Arizona.
It connects major areas of the state and serves commuters, travelers, freight, tourists and local residents every day.
That much traffic means highways require constant maintenance, upgrades and improvements.
Road construction can be frustrating, but much of it is necessary to keep infrastructure functioning as traffic volumes change and transportation needs evolve.
So while Arizona drivers may joke that the construction will never end, the reality is that major highways require ongoing work.
Unfortunately, knowing that doesn’t make sitting in traffic any more enjoyable.
Step 10: Become an Experienced Arizona Driver
Eventually, you develop a survival strategy.
You leave earlier.
You check traffic before leaving.
You keep an eye on navigation apps.
You learn alternative routes.
You stop trusting the phrase “only 10 minutes away.”
And most importantly, you accept that your journey may include an unexpected tour of Phoenix.
You might miss your exit.
You might get rerouted.
You might end up driving several miles before you can turn around.
But eventually, you get where you’re going.
The Arizona I-10 Experience
For many drivers, I-10 has become more than just a highway.
It has become part of the Arizona experience.
The desert.
The mountains.
The giant saguaros.
The Phoenix skyline.
The blazing summer heat.
And, naturally, the orange barrels.
You don’t simply drive I-10.
You experience I-10.
You learn its temporary traffic patterns.
You memorize its construction zones.
You develop an instinct for disappearing lanes.
You become suspicious whenever you see an empty stretch of freeway.
Because you know what is probably coming next.
Construction.
Be Like I-10
There is actually a funny lesson hidden inside all this chaos.
Be like I-10.
Keep moving forward.
Adapt when the road changes.
Take a different lane when necessary.
Expect obstacles.
Accept that some things take longer than expected.
And when life puts up a giant orange sign saying ROAD WORK AHEAD, don’t assume the journey is over.
Sometimes you simply need to slow down, adjust your route and keep going.
Because I-10 may always be under construction—but it keeps carrying people forward.
Always expanding.
Always changing.
Always under construction.
Never quite finished.
And somehow, despite all the cones, delays, lane closures and GPS recalculations…
everyone eventually gets where they’re going. 🌵🚧🚗💀
