Got Coral Bells? 10 Essential Tasks You Must Do This June to Keep Them Thriving Through Brutal Summer Heat

  • by

Although some coral bells tolerate considerable sunlight, intense summer heat can be a different story.

A plant that handled spring sunshine beautifully may struggle when temperatures rise.

If your coral bells receive strong afternoon sun and the leaves begin showing signs of scorching, consider providing some afternoon shade.

A location with morning sun and afternoon shade can be particularly helpful in hot climates.

Keep in mind that different Heuchera varieties have different light tolerances, so check the requirements of your particular cultivar.

4. Add a Layer of Mulch

A layer of organic mulch can help protect the root zone during hot weather.

Spread approximately 2 inches of mulch around the plant, but don’t pile it directly against the crown.

Good options include:

  • Shredded bark
  • Compost
  • Leaf mold
  • Fine wood mulch
  • Other suitable organic mulch

Mulch helps slow evaporation, moderate soil temperature, and reduce competition from weeds.

5. Keep Mulch Away From the Crown

This small detail is extremely important.

The central crown of a coral bells plant should not be buried beneath a thick layer of mulch or constantly wet soil.

Keep the mulch slightly away from the crown so air can circulate and moisture doesn’t remain trapped around the center of the plant.

A buried or excessively wet crown can contribute to rot.

6. Remove Damaged Leaves
