Coral bells, also known as Heuchera, are one of those plants that can completely transform a garden with their colorful foliage. From deep burgundy and purple to lime green, silver, bronze, and rose, their leaves can provide beautiful color even when other plants are struggling.
But when June arrives and temperatures begin climbing, coral bells need a little extra attention. Too much heat, excessive moisture, drought, or intense afternoon sunlight can leave the foliage faded, scorched, or wilted.
The good news is that a few simple tasks can help your coral bells stay healthy and colorful throughout summer.
1. Check the Soil Moisture Regularly
The first thing to check in June is the soil around your coral bells.
Stick your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, it’s time to water.
Coral bells prefer consistent moisture, but they don’t like sitting in constantly wet soil. The goal is moist but well-drained soil.
During periods of extreme heat, plants growing in containers may need attention more frequently because containers dry out faster than garden beds.
2. Water Deeply Instead of Constantly Sprinkling
When watering your coral bells, give the soil a thorough drink rather than repeatedly sprinkling a tiny amount over the surface.
Water slowly around the base of the plant so moisture reaches the root zone.
Try to keep the foliage relatively dry, particularly late in the day. Water sitting on leaves for long periods can encourage certain fungal problems.
Morning is generally an excellent time to water because the plant has the day ahead to dry.
3. Protect Them From Brutal Afternoon Sun
