My husband hit me because dinner was late, and his mother and sister told me to go and cook. I went into the kitchen and shut the door.

PART 1 — TWENTY MINUTES

It was not the hand that did it. It was how fast that table went back to normal afterward.

Julius looked at his mother and his sister and made a noise that was almost a laugh, like a man whose train had been delayed.

“Dinner was supposed to be twenty minutes ago.”

Hyacinth lifted her glass. “A wife who can’t get a meal on the table needs correcting.”

And Celeste crossed her legs and said, “Go and do the noodles, Marisol. Or we’ll see what happens.”

Three months earlier I would have been shaking.

That night I touched the corner of my mouth and looked at the three of them sitting at my table, in my house, under a light fitting I paid four hundred pounds for.

They thought I had nothing because I had spent two years not arguing. People make that mistake about quiet women constantly and it is the most useful thing about being one.

“All right,” I said.

Julius smirked. “Do enough for everyone.”

I went into the kitchen and shut the door, and their voices came straight through it, because they wanted them to.

“She’s finally learning,” Hyacinth said.

“She’s nowhere to go,” Celeste said. “He controls everything.”

That is the sentence I would frame if I were a different sort of woman.

Julius controlled the joint account, the car, and about eleven passwords he was proud of.

He did not control the house, which is in my sole name and has been since 2019. He did not control the business, which is mine and which he has never understood the structure of. And he did not control the folder.

I opened the pantry and took a black document case out from behind the flour tin.

Bank records. Photographs. A memory stick. Certified copies of four invoices I had collected from my own accountant that morning.

My hands were completely steady and I noticed that and it frightened me slightly.

Six months of it.

Hyacinth had been taking money out of my company through invoices from a consultancy that has never done one hour of work for anybody.

Celeste had put eleven thousand pounds of hotels on a card that is in my name and that she was added to as a convenience in 2022.

And Julius had been involved with my former assistant, who was careless enough to use a tablet that was still on our house network.

They had not just done it to me. They had documented the whole thing themselves.

From the dining room: “How long does it take to boil water?”

“Twenty minutes,” I called back.

He laughed.

I opened the security app on my phone. Four cameras, all running, all recording sound, and one of them pointed at the dining table.

Outside the gate there were two cars that had been there since ten to eight.

I put the case on a tray and put the silver lid over it.

Then I sent the message.
